Abstract
In the manufacture of water-resistant abradants, e.g. emery paper and whetstones, a resinous condensation product formed by the reaction of a polyhydric alcohol and a mixture of a fatty acid having at least 10 carbon atoms in the molecule with an organic polybasic acid or with a synthetic resin carboxylic acid, is used as the adhesive or binder. Examples of polyhydric alcohols are glycol, glycerine, pentaerythrite and mannite. As polybasic organic acids there may be used, phthalic, maleic, malonic, succinic, and ether-diglycollic acids, and as fatty acids, capric, lauric, palmitic, stearic, oleic, and ricinoleic acids. Synthetic resin carboxylic acids are obtainable by causing a halogen fatty acid, particularly a chloracetic acid, to react with a phenol-aldehyde resin in the fusible state. In examples (1) glycerine mixed ester from linseed oil and phthalic acid is diluted with twice its weight of acetone and applied to a strip of paper; silicon carbide grains are applied and rolled in; the resin is hardened by heating for 4 hours at 100 DEG C. and one hour at 130 DEG C.; (2) glycerine mixed ester from linseed oil and phthalic acid diluted with acetone is mixed with finely divided silicon to form a suspension; a band of asbestos is impregnated with this suspension, dried and hardened: the treated band can be used for abrading purposes and as a brake band. Other examples are given. Specification 284,349, [Class 95, Paints &c.], and U.S.A. Specification 1,667,189 are referred to.
