Abstract

375,157. Compound paper and pasteboard. ANTOINE, V., Chatel du Wazai, Lambermont, Belgium. Sept. 30, 1931, No. 27182. Convention date, Oct. 1, 1930. [Classes 96'and 140.] Compound paper or pasteboard impregnated with rubber and suitable as a leather substitute is made by introducing a rubber solution or latex between two or more lengths of paper, uniting them by pressure, and causing rubber solution or latex to circulate through the composite fabric. Lengths of paper 28, 29 from drums 27 are sprinkled with rubber solution by nozzles 32, 33, 34 and passed between endless conveyers 13, 14 passing round rollers 9.. 12 and through a bath 1 of rubber solution. The solution is circulated through the composite length by suction and pressure boxes 41, 46. Impregnation is improved by roughening the paper by rasps 37 and by sprinkling with solutions such as aluminium sulphate or colloidal sulphur or carbon. The product passes to drying and vulcanizing apparatus, and if desired to roller mills, engraving rollers, goffering rollers, &c. The solution drawn from the suction boxes may be returned to a constant level reservoir. In treating absorbent papers impregnation may be effected by suction alone and without immersion.
