C is sealed by introducing a phase-changeable material, e.g. solid carbon dioxide I, liquid oxygen &c., into the container through the filling opening la, the closure plate'.3 therefor having been previously removed, the closure plate being then held manually by a chain 4 &c. to seal the opening until the evolution of gas from the contents causes the internal pressure to become substantially greater than that of the atmosphere, the gas pressure then retaining the closure plate in the sealed position. The closure plate 3 seats internally on a gasketfitted screwed top member 1, being held from falling into the container by a chain 2. The drums may be contained in a casing H with a removable lid 7 and provided with relief valves 11. A valve-controlled pipe lead 9 enables the gaseous contents to be dispensed to a carbonating or other apparatus. If it is required to return the liquid gas, at the bottom of the drum &c., to the solid or semi-solid phase a device D is used which expands the liquid through a suitable valve actuated by a member 14, the solidified gas being removed from the chamber 13.
