[Class 12 (iii).] In apparatus carried by a railway vehicle which functions when the vehicle is rounding a curve to discharge lubricant on to the parts of the rails against which the wheel flanges bear, a valve unit controlling the discharge comprises a tubular body A, Figs. 1 and 2,. connected by a pipe B to a source of lubricant under pressure and having a discharge port C<1> in each end cap C, there being arranged within the body a longitudinally-grooved sleeve F with inturned ends forming a cage for ball valves E which normally close the ports C<1> under the influence of a spring or springs G and the pressure of the lubricant, the sleeve being formed with rack teeth H coacting with a pinion J secured on a shaft J<1> carrying an arm K adapted to be moved by striker blocks K<2> adjustably mounted on the vehicle bogey truck. According to the direction of the curve, one or other of the blocks K<2> acts, due to the pivotal movement of the bogey, on the arm K to cause the sleeve F to move longitudinally and thereby lift the appropriate valve E from its port, the other port remaining closed. When the vehicle enters the straight, the parts return to normal position. Where the device is to function only on a curve of a particular hand, being provided with a discharge port in one end cap only, the supply pipe B is connected to the other end cap, which is then provided with transverse holes putting the port therein into permanent communication with the interior of the body A ; or the device may be arranged as shown in Fig. 4, in which there is provided only one ball valve, the spring P of which bears against an abutment O<1> in the sleeve F while another spring P<1> is interposed between the abutment and the end cap to which the supply pipe B is connected. The source of lubricant may comprise a vaporizer in which oil and compressed air from the braking system are mixed.
