Abstract

Metals are cleaned prior to painting, varnishing, &c. by applying a solution containing arsenic acid. An oil solvent, e.g. acetone, ethyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, or a mixture of ethyl and butyl alcohols, may be added to the solution which may be mixed with an absorbent material, e.g. raw starch, flour, charcoal, or clay, preferably colloidal clay.ALSO:Metals are treated prior to painting, varnishing &c. by allowing a solution containing arsenic acid to act on the metal, the spent solution being then removed together with the products of the reaction. The solution may be applied by dipping, brushing, or spraying, the metal being finally washed, dried and painted. An oil solvent, e.g. acetone, ethyl alcohol, butyl alcohol or a mixture of ethyl and butyl alcohols may be added to the solution, the metal being preferably scoured with steel wool while in contact with the solution and finally washed and dried either with cloths, by heating in an oven or by an air blast. The solution may be applied in admixture with an absorbent material, e.g. raw starch, flour, charcoal or clay, preferably colloidal clay in which case the metal, coated with the cleaning material is heated in an oven at about 100 DEG C. till the coating is dry, when the spent acid and reaction products may be removed by brushing or wiping without washing.
