Abstract
373,685. Tyre valves. WATSON, F.H., P.O. Box 538, Jonesboro, Arkansas, U.S.A. March 10, 1931, No. 7427. [Class 135.] A tyre valve comprises a stem of yieldable materia which carries means comprising an in sides container for holding the cap, said means extending outside the stem and being of smaller diameter than the stem so that the end of the stem forms a seat for the rim of the cap. The yieldable nature of the stem 1 and the generally tapering configuration formed by the stem 1, a sleeve 9, and the cap 10 facilitate the escape of the entire construction through a hole 5 in the rim 6, in the event of sudden deflation causing the outer cover 7 to drag the inner tube 3 relative to the rim 6. The sleeve 9 which is of smaller external diameter than the stem 1 below its shoulder 14, fits tightly on a rebated portion 13 of the stem 1 above said shoulder, and extends almost to the top of the stem. A bore 23 connects the inner tube 3 with a cylindrical cavity 21 at the top of the stem. A shoulder 22 in said cavity engages the lower part 18 of the insides container, whereon a quick pitch thread is provided. The upper part 17 of the insides container, which is threaded internally and externally, is of larger diameter than the part 18 and is provided with flats to provide a pincer hold. The cap 10 which has a tubular extension of smaller diameter 11 provided with two diametrically opposite slots 12, has an external diameter less than the internal diameter of the sleeve 9, and screws on to the insides container, a leak-tight joint being formed by the rim of the cap and the annular seating 15 formed by the top of the stem and confined between the sleeve 9 and the part 18 of the insides container. A fabric liner 27 extends from the cavity 21 down the bore 23 to the underside of a flap 2 integral with the valve stem 1 and secured to the inside of the inner tube 3. A rounded shoulder 26 at the junction of the stem 1 and' the flap 2 effectively seals the hole 5 when the tyre is inflated.
