[Classes 20 (ii) and 20 (iv).] Masonry structures are reinforced by metal insertions in the walls before they are underpinned in order to obviate the use of needling or other falsework. Vertical and horizontal grooves on both faces are cut into the masonry at the lower parts of the walls and structural metal bars are cemented into the grooves and connected by cross-bolts a, n, the bars being joined on each side by straps vch disposed horizontally and vertically to form a reinforced-concrete reinforcement for the building which can be supported by reinforced-concrete uprights provided with reinforced-concrete extension feet. The upright supports are positioned before excavation under the building or the cutting of the wall occurs. Mesh wirework m may be used with the concrete to form a binding agent.
