373,210. Preventing unauthorized use of motor vehicles. EICHENAUER, R., 7, Langestrasse, Frankfort-on-Main, Germany. Feb. 7, 1931, No. 4281. [Class 79 (iii).] Means for locking the steering wheel of a motor vehicle to prevent unauthorized use, comprises a pair of oppositely facing cupped members A, B, one with peripheral holes J being secured to the steering wheel or its shaft and normally rotatable within the other which is secured to the steering pillar or, in the absence thereof, to an adjustable bracket carried by the dash &c. Looking is effected by inserting a key-carrying member U, Fig. 3, into a keyhole-shaped slot K in a lug or boss D on the cupped member B, the end of the member U entering one of the holes J in the wall of the inner cupped member A, at the same time making contact with an electric terminal E bringing an alarm device into operation. The key U<1>, which is removable, controls rotation within the member U of a sleeve carrying a lug Y so that withdrawal of the member U may be prevented by turning the lug Y within a circular chamber X beyond the keyhole slot K. The cupped member B is secured by nuts R<1> on bolts R fixed in a flange P on a divided sleeve O clamped on the steering pillar W by bolts N or, if the member B is carried by a bracket, the inner cupped member A is secured to the steering shaft by such means. As shown, the member A is secured to a disc or plate C by screws M which traverse radial bores S wherein grub screws L fixing the disc C to the steering wheel hub T are located, access to the grub screws being thereby prevented. The attachment elements being enclosed, access thereto is prevented when the device is locked, removal of the nuts R<1> being ineffectual as the bolts R are fixed in the flange P.
