Abstract

A collecting electrode for use in the electrical precipitation of suspended material from gases comprises a vertically extending screen unprovided with catch pockets on the side exposed to the gases to be treated, a receiving space for the dust on the opposite side of the screen, and baffle means extending across the receiving space and arranged at intervals along the length of the collecting electrode in a direction transverse to the gas current. Fig. 2 shows an application to a plate-type precipitator wherein the gas stream flows horizontally. The collecting electrode consists of pervious screens 5 with a material-receiving space 6 at the side of the screen 5 opposite to the discharge electrodes 4. Baffle members 11 affixed to a partition plate 8 extend vertically along the electrode. The partition 8 may be omitted if desired. A suitable arrangement of plate-type collecting electrodes for vertical gas flow is shown in Fig. 6, each electrode comprising two screens 31 with a receiving space 32 between. The upper end of the electrode is closed by a horizontal baffle 33 and horizontal intermediate baffles 34 having openings 35 to permit the downward passage of the precipitated material are arranged at intervals down the screens 31. The openings 35 are preferably located at the centre of the baffles 34. Passages <PICT:0372883/III/1> <PICT:0372883/III/2> <PICT:0372883/III/3> <PICT:0372883/III/4> 39 leading to a suitable hopper are provided at the bottom of each electrode to prevent the precipitated dust coming into contact with the gas stream. An arrangement for use with a pipe-type collecting electrode and vertical gas flow is shown in Figs. 8 and 9, each electrode consisting of a vertical cylindrical screen 46, the space 49 constituting the material-receiving space. Partition plates 51, 52 may be provided to give a receiving space for each electrode, but one or both of these partitions may be omitted. The transverse baffle members 53 are constituted by inverted V-shaped channels having openings 55 for the precipitated material. Auxiliary baffles 56 may be provided to minimize the circulation of gas between the collecting electrode members. The precipitating efficiency is stated to be increased by increasing the number and decreasing the spacing of the intermediate baffles.
