Abstract
372,807. Fire-extinguishers. JONES, F. HAYES- and DURSTON, G. H., 150, Southampton Row, London. Jan. 13, 1931, No. 1212. [Class 47 (ii).] A fire-extinguisher, particularly for vehicles, capable of both hand and automatic operation, comprises a frangible receptacle A supported on a hinged platform B within an open-topped casing C by means of resilient packing D, D<1>. The platform is held normally in horizontal position by a slidable latch B4 resting on a strip E secured to the casing by fusible material E<1>. The latch can be pushed back to release the receptacle by means of a pivoted lever F<2> and a manual control F<3>. Similarly, fusion of the material E<1> releases the receptacle. When released, it falls upon a spike G, and its contents escape by a pipe C<4> or through perforations in the bottom C<2> of the casing. Should the vehicle overturn, the receptacle will fall out from the upper end of the casing and be broken. In a modification, Fig. 4, the receptacle is held by packing H<1> and a spring H<3> in a casing H provided with a removable cover H<4>. The casing has pins M<2>, M<3> engaging in guides M on a supporting bracket K, and is held at the upper end of the bracket by a rod K<8> engaging a strip K<7> soldered at K<9> to the casing. Fusi.on of the solder or withdrawal of the rod K<8> by a manual control allows the casing to fall upon a spike O<3> in a cap O provided with a pipe O<1> and perforations O<2>. The receptacle can be used as a grenade by lifting a hinged plate K<3>, removing the casing from the bracket, and removing the cover H<4>. In either construction, a spring-pressed plunger may be provided additionally for breaking the receptacle. The receptacle may be doublewalled to prevent injury by temperature variations.
