Abstract

Vat dye preparations for use in printing textiles, including cotton, wool and cellulose acetate silk, contain salts of the products of reaction of halogen fatty acids and aromatic hydroxy compounds. The latter may be added at any stage in the manufacture of the printing pastes, thus the dyestuff paste may be stirred with glycerine or another water-soluble alcohol and the product or the dyestuff may be ground and mixed with the product, or aqueous pastes of the dyestuff may be evaporated to dryness in the presence of the product with or without the addition of dextrin or an emulsifying agent, or the dyestuff may be reduced in the presence of glycerine or other water-soluble alcohols, e.g. thiodiglycol or thiodiglycerol, with previous, simultaneous or subsequent addition of the product, or the products may be added directly to the printing paste. The dyestuff preparations or printing pastes may also contain anthraquinone or a derivative thereof, such as a hydroxy or amino derivative or a sulphonic or carboxylic acid, or such reduction products thereof as still contain oxygen in the ms-position. In examples, (1) 6 : 6<1>-diethoxythioindigo is made into a printing paste with wheat starch, British gum, tragacanth, potassium carbonate, sodium formaldehyde-sulphoxylate, glycerine and the sodium salt of phenoxyacetic acid or of p-cresoxyacetic acid; (2) the dyestuff used in example 1 may be replaced by the dyestuff from 6-methoxy-3-oxythionaphthene and 4-methyl-6-brom-2 : 3-dihydro-3-ketothionaphthene - 2-(p-dimethylamino)-anil, 4 : 6-4<1> : 6<1>-tetramethyl-5 : 5<1>-dichlorthoindigo, Caledon jade green, 3<1> : 4<1>-dichlor-1 : 2-anthraquinoneacridone or 6 : 6<1>-dimethylthioindigo. Instead of salts of phenoxy- or cresoxy-acetic acids, other salts of the products of reaction of halogen fatty acids, including b -chlorpropionic acid or halogen fatty acids with branched or longer chains, with aromatic hydroxy compounds (including a - and b -naphthol) may be used. The printing pastes may be applied with or without previous reduction of the dyestuffs. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 17437/11, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.].
