Abstract

Seaweed is heated with caustic alkali, a tanning agent is added, and the heat treatment continued to produce a gelatinous substance for manufacturing purposes. To this may be added after drying rubber latex or dried rubber, solid oils, bitumens, &c. The seaweed jelly is always thoroughly dried before mixing with the above materials. The product may be moulded or dissolved in solvents such as naphtha and applied to fabrics, for example, hospital sheeting. Fabrics thus treated lend themselves after drying and calendering to embossing, varnishing and other surface treatment. A small amount of ,880 ammonia may be added in addition to the caustic alkali during the preparation of the seaweed. In an example one ton of bladder-wrack is boiled in a 1 per cent caustic alkali solution for two hours with stirring, 2-3 gallons of ,880 ammonia are added, and the mixture boiled another hour. Half a hundred weight of cutch is added and the whole boiled for 5 hours.
