Abstract

371,331. Vehicle lamps. SCHWABE, H. J., 2, Stollberger Strasse, Chemnitz, Germany. Oct. 18, 1930. No. 31284. Convention date, Nov. 4, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 75 (iv).] Lantern screens.-A screening device for vehicle lamps comprises a collapsable, semicylindrical shield arranged at the off-side of the lamp and adapted to be extended in front of the lamp, so that the front end is moved across the light beam. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the collapsable pleated shield is supported by a hoop 11, carried by stationary tubes 5, 6, and by hoops 12, 13 respectively rigidly and pivotally connected with the free ends of rods 7, 8 which slide in the tubes 5, 6. The hoop 13 is connected to a cam plate 14, and as the rod 7 slides forward a pin 15 engaging in the slot 8 causes the rotation of plate and hoop about the axis 16, and the deflection of the shield in front of the lamp, after which the stud 15 leaves the slot 18. The hoop 13 is held in the deflected position'by a spring-controlled locking pin 19 having a cross-head 22 which is engaged by the forked end of a member 21 on the return movement so as to release the cam plate 14 and hoop 13. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the hoops 10<11>, 11<11> are carried by threaded rods 8<11>, 9<11> (not shown) caused to move by the rotation of internally threaded tubes. One end of the hoop 11<11> fits into a holder 15<11> formed with a pinion wheel. A rack 21<11>, carried by the frame supporting the threaded tubes, is swept by the pinion as it moves forwards or backwards, and so turns the front end of the shield. A locking pin holds it in position as before, and is retracted as before. Part 26<11> of the front ring of the lamp moves with the shield. The threaded tubes are rotated by a series of conical gears actuated by hand, from the engine or fan shaft, or' by electric motors. In the form of Fig. 11, the front of the lamp is covered by two translucent screens 4<111>, 5<111>, leaving between them a diametrical slit. A vertical translucent shield 2<111> at one side of the slit, parallel to the light beam, dims the light to the off-side. The shield 2<111> may be rigid or foldable, and is mounted in a guideway. Alternatively, in the form shown in Fig. 10, the slit is formed in the crown of a collapsable translucent shield 8<111> which is detachable or retractable within the casing, and the upper part 7<111> of which is covered with opaque material. Frames covered with translucent material or a system of roller blinds may reduce the full illumination to a narrow slit, or may form the shield 2<111> of Fig. 11. -
