Abstract

371,228. Valve amplifying circuits. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, London. -(Assignees of Beers, G. L. ; 4743, Lafayette Avenue, Merchantville, New Jersey, U.S.A.) July 10, 1931, No. 19903. Convention date, Aug. 15, 1930. [Class 40 (v).] A radio receiver having automatic volume control and automatic means for rendering inoperative the signal reproducer is characterized by the provision of a common potentiometer to give grid bias and plate potentials for the whole receiver. The Figure shows a superheterodyne receiver in which the output from the second detector 1 is applied to a low-frequency amplifier 7 feeding an output circuit such as a loudspeaker 27. In parallel with the detector 1 is connected a volume control valve 3 having a resistance 19 in its anode circuit whereby the grid bias of a preceding high-frequency amplifier 5 is varied in accordance with signal strength. The output from the control valve 3 is applied to a suppressor valve 8, the output circuit of which includes the windings of a relay 21, the contacts of which are arranged to short-circuit the utilization circuit 27; alternatively the contacts may open the loud-speaker circuit or the loud-speaker field-winding or the plate or filament supply to the amplifier 7. The grid bias of the control valve 3 is adjusted at 29 so that with no signal, no current flows in resistance 19. The grid of the suppressor valve 8 then assumes a potential depending on the positions of tapping 31 and connection of 19 to the potentiometer 17, and with no incoming signal, the anode current through 21 is just sufficient to maintain contacts 22 closed. In order to provide for varying signal-noise ratio, the suppresser valve may be dispensed with and the relay 21 connected in the anode circuit of the high-frequency valve 5 the relay winding being shunted by a resistance connected to a variable tapping on potentiometer 17 so that the relay may be adjusted to operate at different values of anode current or signal strength, Fig. 2 (not shown), Specification 372,155 is referred to.
