July 7, 1931, No. 19555. Convention date, July 12, 1930. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Planishing and hammering ; physical or molecular structure, altering by mechanical treatment.-Annular bodies, such as brake drums, are peripherally supported on one surf ace, while another surface is swaged by a number of equi-angularly disposed, simultaneously operated hammers. A brake drum 10 is held between clamping jaws 13, whose inner surface is of the form of the finished drum, and rotated relatively to an annular support 15 carrying radially movable diametrically opposed hammers 16, with narrow working ribs 17. A shaft 18 has recesses 19 in which frusto-conical rollers 20 are mounted, and is rotated, the hammers 16 being actuated when the rollers 20 strike inner ribs 21. A mandrel 22, of similar taper to the rollers 20, is moved axially during the operation gradually to feed the hammers into the work, the swaging being continued at the inner position to harden the surfaces of the work.
