Abstract

In the manufacture of artificial silk, horsehair, ribbons, or films by the viscose or cuprammonium process, a solution of adeps lan in a volatile solvent is distributed in the material from which the product is made in the form of an emulsion. The volatile solvent may be benzene, petrol, petrol ether, carbon tetrachloride, ether, chloroform, acetone, turpentine, chlorbenzene, or pine oil. The dulling effect of these liquids is modified by the presence of adeps lan which also imparts softness to the artificial silk or other product and prevents the formation of speckles. The viscosity of the liquid which is emulsified with the spinning solution is preferably of the same viscosity as the solution and for this purpose the adeps lan may be dissolved in a mixture of solvents such as pine oil and petrol, benzene, or ether. In an example, adeps lan dissolved in benzene is emulsified with an equal volume of viscose. This emulsion is then thoroughly mixed with a larger quantity of viscose and then after a further quantity of viscose has been added and intimately mixed, the resulting emulsion is employed for the manufacture of artificial silk. The Provisional Specifications describe also the addition of adeps lan to the materials from which artificial threads and films of cellulose esters or ethers are made. The addition may be made with or without a special solvent to the carbon bisulphide used in the manufacture of viscose, or to the acetone used for dissolving cellulose acetate.
