[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 20, 1931.] [Class 60.] Wheels.-Abrasive wheels are reinforced by a member normally in tension in a plane normal to the axis of the wheel, and additional metal reinforcing members may be employed. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the abrasive wheel 2 has secured thereto, on its flat faces, reinforcing members 3, which may have embedded therein, as shown in Fig. 3, metal rings 5, or a metal member in the form of a spiral. The members 3 may comprise a hard rubber composition consisting of 10 parts rubber, 2.5 parts sulphur, and 90 parts SiC, which is applied in plastic form to the wheel face after treating this with 'a rubber compound, the wheel then being heated with the composition under pressure, to about 320‹ F. and cooled slowly. The composition hardens at about 200‹ F. and, on further cooling, contracts more than the abrasive portion, and so is in a normal state of tension. When the metal portions are to be used, the composition may be applied in two layers with the metal between them. In place of the rubber composition, a compound of a phenolic condensation product may be used in the formation of the reinforcing members ; one reinforcing member only may be employed. The reinforcing member may have thereon a metal plate 8, Fig. 6, with concentric grooves 9 therein. The wheel is secured to its shaft 10, Fig. 7, by means of member 11, 13 and a nut 14.
