Abstract
368,991. Calculating - apparatus. ANDERSEN, K. I., Lundbaek, Nibe, Denmark. March 16, 1931, No. 8061. Convention date, March 17, 1930. [Class 106 (i).] A calculating device for summing respectively the ordinates and the abscissµ of a number of points on various curves comprises two relatively-movable cylindrical surfaces, one carrying the curves, and a sleeve which can slide and rotate relatively to both surfaces and which carries two index points. The embodiment described is for determining the weights of various kinds of fodder which should be fed to dairy cattle in order that they may produce a given weight of milk. Within a hollow cylinder 1, 1<1> slides a tube 3 secured to a second cylinder 2. A sleeve 10 with reading apertures 11, 12 provided with indexes i<1>, i2 slides over both cylinders. A series of curves M, starting from a common transverse plane and each relating to a different kind of fodder, is marked on the cylinder 2. If developed, the ordinates of these curves would represent protein values and the abscissµ " fodder units." The curves are marked along their lengths with divisions representing weights of fodder. In use, the index i<1> is set to the zero of one of the scales M and the sleeve 10 moved to allow the index to follow the curve until a desired weight is indicated. By moving the tube 2 the zero of another curve M is brought beneath the index i<1> and the process repeated, the result being that the index i<2> indicates the sum of both the ordinates and the abscissµ of the chosen points on the scales M. On the cylinder 1 is a curve A graduated along its length in weights of milk produced and plotted to ordinates representing protein values and abscissµ representing fodder units. If the amounts of fodder selected by the curves Mare correct, the index i<2> coincides with the required milk yield on the curve A. In a modification, the sleeve 10 is transparent and a series of interchangeable cylinders 1 bearing different curves A is provided.
