Abstract

368,731. Filtering gases. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and LAMBERT, B. VINCENT-, Fraser & Chalmers Engineering Works, Erith, Kent. Dec. 1, 1930, No. 36206. [Class 8 (ii).] Bag filters, such as those used for cleaning blast furnace gases, are provided with means, responsive to the pressure drop across the bags, for controlling an electric circuit to give an indication to an attendant or cause a cleaning operation to be performed' on the bags. As shown in Fig. 1, a flexible diaphragm 1 in a chamber 2, connected by pipes. 3, 4 to either side of a filter, turns a lever 8 and causes mercury in a tube 10 to close an electric circuit, which, by relay, closes a switch 21, Fig. 2, in the circuit 20 of a coil 19 operating a contactor 11. The latter closes a main circuit 13, 14, which by leads 15 .. 18 is connected to motors each of which operates the cleansing devices of a group of filters. The motors instead of being connected in the main circuit may be connected in circuits which are closed successively by a conductor on a plate 12, rotated through worm and bevel gearing by a motor 22 in the circuit 20. The operating motors are preferably connected with valves which control cleansing operations in such a manner that the positions of the valves are altered as required without reversal of the motors, which are merely started and stopped. The motors may operate devices which shake the filter bags to detach dust therefrom. The shaking is preferably associated with a reversal of gas pressure through the filter. Fig. 4 shows a rotary valve 28 which has a connection 30 to the discharge side of the filter and connections 29, 31. to suction and to the atmosphere respectively. The valve is rotated by a motor (not shown) the circuit of which is closed by contacts'on the member 11, Fig. 2. The filter bags are cleansed when the position of the valve allows of communication between the connections 30, 31. Contacts 34 which can be opened by a cam 33 on the valve spindle ensure that the circuit of the operating motor for the valve is kept closed until the valve has returned to its normal position.
