Abstract
368,367. Aircraft structures. BUDD MANUFACTURING CO., E. G., 2500, Hunting Park Avenue, Philadelphia, U.S.A. -(Assignees of Ragsdale, E. J. W. ; Curren Terrace, Norristown, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Dec. 1, 1930, No. 36166. Convention date, Dec. 27, 1929. Addition to 366,965. [Class 4.] Modifications of the structure described in the parent Specification comprise beaded reinforcements for the channels of the struts, Fig. 4, a different method of connecting the struts one to another and to the chord members, Fig. 2, and the provision of channel reinforcing members for the chord members when the design of the fuselage necessitates curving these members, Figs. 9 and 10. The diagonal struts 16, Fig. 2, are welded to the sides of the chord member before attachment of the transverse struts 15 which are welded by inturned channel sides 32<1> to the appropriate channel side of the strut 16 before application of the gusset plate 36. Channels 41, Fig. 9, tapered toward either end are applied midway of the bays in which the chord members are curved and when welded to the sides of the inner chord member 21 form a box-section reinforcement, Fig. 10, progressively reduced in cross section from the centre of channel 41 to the ends. In assembly the lower chord members are held in a jig which imparts the desired curvature to them during welding of the members 41 ; next the upper and lower pairs of chords are assembled with the struts lying in planes transverse to the plane of symmetry and the two girders thus formed are then interconnected by the struts of the side walls of the body.
