Abstract
367,996. Carbonyl processes ; alloys. JOHNSON, J. Y., 47, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.; Frankfort-on-Main, Germany.) Jan. 17, 1931, No. 1621. [Classes 72 and 82 (i).] Metals, particularly in the form of fine powder, are obtained from solid carbonyls such as cobalt tetracarbonyl or tricarbonyl, molybdenum carbonyl, tungsten carbonyl, and sublimed chromium carbonyl, by causing the carbonyls to fall through a heated space in a comminuted solid state. Finely powdered metal carbonyl may be fed into the top of a vertical decomposition chamber by a conveyer worm or a shaking sieve, and it may pass directly into the chamber from a mill. The apparatus may comprise an electrically heated vertical chamber A, carbonyl container C, screw conveyer D, metal collecting chamber E, and gas inlet and outlet F, G. The decomposition may be cartied out in the presence of a gas such as ammonia. Several carbonyls may be decomposed together, mixtures of metals suitable for working up into alloys being obtained. Solid carbonyls and liquid carbonyls such as iron or nickel carbonyl may be treated together, either the solid being introduced as above and the liquid being atomized or vaporized into the chamber or the solid being suspended in the liquid and the mixture being atomized.
