Abstract

367,334. Artificial limbs &c. DESOUTTER BROS., Ltd., 73, Baker Street, London.-(Assignees of Loth, J. ; 28, Bergstrasse, K÷slin, Pommern, Germany.) Aug. 14, 1930, No. 24402. Convention date, Oct. 12, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 81 (ii).] In making artificial limbs and other orthopµdic devices the stump is cast and moulded in its normal weighted condition. In the case of a leg, the stump a may first be covered with a piece of hosiery or tricot pipe b, secured in position by a rubber ring c and if necessary also an adhesive strip. The stump is then fitted with a conical cap, preferably also secured in position by an adhesive strip, and thereafter is covered with a plastic mass, for example, of plastic rubber or caoutchouc. At the back part of the leg this dressing may consist of a wide and downwardly tapering plate of caoutchouc covering about one third of the stump, and reinforced by an inside thin perforated plate of light metal. The front part of the stump is also covered with caoutchouc, and further reinforced caoutchouc strips e may be employed longitudinally and circumferentially, as shown in Fig. 2. The stump is now wrapped round with five or six layers of plaster bandage or other gypso-plastic dressing f. When the bandages have hardened the stump is placed under the full weight of the patient upon a block g of adjusted height, the upper part of the caoutchouc covering is wrapped in plaster bandages f<1>, and the contours are worked by hand. When hard, the form is taken off the stump and filled with plaster of Paris. The work piece is then vulcanized, freed from the plaster of Paris and inserted in a funnel of metal, wood, or other suitable material shaped to the form of the limb to be replaced. In some cases the invention may be carried out by placing a metal cone on the stump, and filling the intermediate space with spongy belt or like plastic material soaked in paraffin wax or the like, the patient wearing this device so that the felt hardens under working conditions. From this felt mould a plaster cast is taken, and then caoutchouc is used to form the socket as above described.
