[Class 83 (iv).] A shifting and tilting device comprises two independently movable side guides and a tilting element mounted to move with one of the side guides without being active except when separate tilting mechanism is in operation. The guide 16 is mounted on the headed ends of rack bars 14 so supported by rollers 13 that the top surfaces are just below the surface of the table rollers 11. The rack bars are traversed by pinions 24 on a shaft 25 geared to a motor 27. A second motor 32 is similarly geared to pinions 29 that engage a second set of bars 17 that carry the other guide 22, and also support, at 19 the tilting mechanism, which comprises fingers 33 with stepped edges 34 adapted to move through slots in the guide 22 when lifted by pivotal connection to arms on rack shafts 37 linked at 39 to a head 40 on a rack bar 41 kept in engagement with a pinion 43 in a housing 44 by rollers 50. To avoid actuation of the fingers 33 when the guide 22 is traversed, the shaft 30 carries a pinion 48 equal in size to the pinions 29 and geared to the pinion 43 by an idler 44. The rack bar 41 thus travels at the same speed as the bars 17. When the fingers 33 are to be actuated the housing 44, which is trunnioned about the axis of the wheel 44, is rocked by a link 52 actuated by a crank disc 54 geared to a motor 57. In a modification the rack bar 41 is replaced by a cord 63, Fig. 5, passing over a pulley 62, mounted on a swinging arm 60, and received on a winding-drum 64 in the shaft 30 and of such size that the cord is wound up or paid out according to the movement of the rack bars 17. For tilting, the arm 60 is rocked as by the linkage shown.
