[Class 103 (v).] Relates to automatic knuckle couplings for railway &c. vehicles of the kind in which the lock 12 is raised to the unlocking position by means of a lifter and in which the coupler-head 22 is provided with an anticreep shoulder 18 or its equivalent co-operating with an abutment or element associated with the lock, releasing means being provided for displacing this abutment to a position in which it must clear the anticreep shoulder when the lift member is operated to raise the lock. According to the invention means are provided for preventing the lock 12 taking up a position in which binding may occur between the anticreep shoulder and the abutment 38, rendering the releasing means ineffective to permit raising of the lock by operation of the lift member, such means, in the construction shown, comprising a cam surface 40 arranged on the forward wall 22 of the coupler-head opening adjacent to the shoulder 18 and designed to contact with the lower end of the lock 12 so as to prevent undue tilting of the lock. In this construction the pivot 16 of the lifter 39 works in a slot 30 of the lock, and the abutment 38, which is disposed on the lifter co-operates in the normal way with the shoulder 18, as shown in Fig. 2, to prevent creep. The lower end of the lock may be shaped as shown in Fig. 7, and the lock may have surfaces 27, 29 coacting in known manner with corresponding rear walls 24, 25 on the coupler-head, Fig. 5, to prevent lateral tilting of the lock in the coupler-head opening.
