[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 29, 1930.] [Class 83 (iv).] Dies.-Work is fed to a holder, upset by electric upsetting mechanism and then carried by the work holder to forging dies by which the upset head is brought to final shape. In the apparatus shown three work carriers in the form of pairs of jaws 14 are mounted on a disc 4 rotated at intervals through a third of a revolution by a ratchet wheel 2, pawl 16<11>, bell crank 16<1> and a cam on shaft 22. Work pieces are contained in holes 31<1> in a ratchet carrier disc 191 operated stepwise by pawl arm 19, and fall therefrom one at a time into the jaws 14, the lower end of the work piece being supported on a fixed plate 36. Movement of the disc 4 carries work piece in line with anvil 26 and ram 27a of the electric upsetting device, anvil 26 being adjustable by a hand-wheel 40 and ram 27a working through a hole in plate 36. The heating current is supplied by a constant current device to avoid burning of the work at the neck formed below the upset head. Ram 27a is operated by cam 13. The next movement of disc 4 carries work piece above die 17 into which it is allowed to fall by the opening of jaws 14, the upset head being then finally shaped whilst still hot by the ram 5. The finished forging is pushed out of die 17 by an ejector 12. An electromagnet may be located near the die 17 to draw the released forging if of ferrous material to one side and allow it to fall out of the machine. Fig. 3 shows the upsetting ram 27a operated by cam 13 through a member 58 provided with guide stem 59 at one end and roller 60 bearing on plate 61 at the other to avoid distortion of the work during upsetting.
