Abstract

365,641. Rubber soled footwear. BROOMFIELD, H., Fairlawn, Earls-Barton, Northamptonshire. Oct. 23, 1930, No. 31904. [Class 17 (ii).] A boot or shoe, other than of the turnshoe type, comprises a sole A formed by moulding plastic rubber or rubber compound with an upstanding peripheral flange B to which an upper C of any desired material is attached, the inner face of the sole and flange having secured thereto a backing of asbestos, cork, felt, leather, or other material. The sole is moulded with a stiff or flexible waist A<1> and with an integral heel or a heel seat for the attachment of a heel, or with a heel breast covering flap. The sole is curved transversely to correspond with the shape of the foot, and a pad of asbestos, sponge rubber, cork, felt, loofah, or other material may be inserted in a recess moulded in the heel. The flange and sole portion may be of rubber of different kinds, and holes reinforced with eyelets, if necessary, may be made in the flange for the attachment of the upper by a threaded thong D, and for ventilating. Alternatively, the upper may be vulcanized to the sole or lasted on an insole and joined to the sole. The edge of the upper C may butt against the upper edge of the flange B or extend inside it to the inside of the sole A. Alternatively, it may extend outside of the upper and a strip of canvas may be secured inside the shoe to the upper and the flange.
