Abstract

365,588. Jacking and turning vehicles in confined spaces. FELDINE, M., 15, Rue Leconte de Lisle, Paris. Sept. 18, 1930, No. 27930. Convention date, Oct. 7, 1929. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii).] Apparatus for tilting or lifting a vehicle off the ground and turning it within a confined space comprises a more or less central jacking attachment A and a pair of vertically adjustable rods 41 with castor feet 42 arranged in proximity to the front or rear wheels, the central attachment comprising two or more screw-threaded rods 22 secured to a plate 23 connected by a ball joint 24 to a foot or base plate 25, the upper ends of the rods 22 passing through a box or casing 17 secured to a cross frame member. Within the box, pinions 21, Fig. 3, threaded on to the rods mesh with the toothed periphery 20 of a gear wheel 19 adapted to be driven in either direction by bevel pinions 29, 30 splined on a shaft 26 flexibly coupled to a shaft 28 protruding from the usual gear box 13 and deriving its drive from the primary shaft of the change-speed gear. The bevel pinions 29, 30, connected by a fork 32 with an operating handle 33, are moved axially to bring one or other into mesh with the bevel gear 19 to raise or lower the rods 22, and therewith the base 25, by rotation of the pinions 21. The rods 41, formed with rack teeth 40, are simultaneously operated through pinions 39 and flexible or jointed shafts 36 driven through worm or other gears 34, 35 from the rear pair of pinions 21. The length or manner of operation of the rods 41 may be such as to cause the front end of the vehicle to be raised, or coupling means may be provided on the shafts 36 to enable the tilting to be regulated. Stops may be provided on the rods 22 to limit the lift. To enable the vehicle to be rotated about the base 25 when raised thereon, a splined worm wheel 51 on the shaft 26 may, by a lever 52, be brought into mesh with a worm 50 on a jointed and extensible shaft 49 which transmits rotation to a worm 48 mounted in overhanging brackets 100 attached to the plate 23 and in engagement with an annular worm wheel 47 fixed by stays 46 to the base 25, the effect being that the worm 48 together with the vehicle travels around the fixed worm wheel 47. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a modification, Fig. 6 (Cancelled), wherein the ball and socket connection 54 is arranged between the vehicle frame 5, and the upper end of a shaft 56 having a screw thread 57 operating in a second threaded member 58 in the manner of the usual telescopic screw jacks, the member 58 co-operating with the base 59. The drive is transmitted from the gear-box shaft through a flexible shaft to a worm 61 engaging the periphery of a wheel 60 loose on the jack shaft 56, operation of a double clutch 67, 68, coupling the wheel 60 to the shaft directly or through reversing gearing 63, 65. When the base 59 is on the ground, a slidable casing 69 may be raised to engage lugs 71 on the worm wheel 60 to hold this stationary so that by continuing to drive the worm 61, the vehicle may be rotated about the axis of the shaft 56. In this form the castor rods 41 may be operated by means of a cable 72 attached to a ring 73 encircling the base 59 of the jack, the cable passing over a drum and serving to rotate the rack gears 39. It is also stated that the arrangement shown in Figs. 1-4 may be arranged to be driven by a hand crank instead of by the engine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
