Abstract

364,002. Screw propellers. ALUMINIUM, Ltd., 22, Canada Life Building, Toronto, Canada.-(Assignees of Handler, A. A.; 2210, Harvard Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.) Aug. 19, 1930, No. 24794. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1929. [Class 114.] A screw propeller is manufactured from a blank by applying a deforming force, by forging rolls, which .is progressively increased from the hub to the tip. The blank A, Fig. 1, has an end-piece 1 whereby it may be held during the process of roller forging. The blank A of aluminium alloy is first heated to a condition wherein it is readily workable, about 820‹ F., and is then subjected to the action of the forging rolls, a number of passes of the rolls being used for successive deformations. In one method the rolls are mounted eccentrically so that the deforming force increases progressively during a rolling pass, when the general propeller shape, Figs. 5 and 6, is obtained. Further shaping may be by the action of forging dies or pressing. The blade is finished by cleaning, trimming and sizing, heated to 960‹ F. for about 12 hours and then quenched and aged for 18 hours at a temperature of 310‹ C. It is stated that under this treatment the wrought metal fibres are set up in flow lines in parallelism with the outer surface. When an aluminium alloy is used, a suitable composition is 94 per cent aluminium, 4¢ per cent copper, ¥ per cent manganese and ¥ per cent silicon.
