Abstract

363,112. Supporting cables. LOGAN, M. B., The Hame, Second Avenue, Summerley Estate, Felpham, Sussex. Dec. 1, 1930, No. 36161. [Class 36.] In order to reduce torsional strain on masts having rigid cable supporting arms when the cable breaks, each mast is provided with a chain or steel rope attached to a loose collar encircling the mast, the chain being led over the rigid arm and carrying the cable from its overhanging portion. The chain is normally maintained in position by horns on the arm end, the chain riding over the horns on breakage of the cable and pulling into alignment with the portion of the severed cable. Fig. 1 shows a series of masts A .. A<2> and an anchor tower B which support cables a, b, c and earth wire d. The towers have arms e. The cable c is broken and the chains attached to the cable c are shown pulled into alignment with the severed cable ends. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 2 and 3, a mast A is provided with a collar 1 which bears on an arm e and which carries a flexible element 2 formed with an overhanging portion 2a. The cable c is supported from the portion 2a. Each arm e consists of parallel angle irons braced by angle irons e<1>. A channel iron 5 with upwardly diverging horns 6 retains the element 2 normally in position. In order to reduce shock on the mast on breakage of the cable, the element 2 may be attached to the collar 1 by a clamp 9 which will permit a rearward portion 2b of the element 2 to be drawn through the clamp 9 until a stop 10 on the portion 2b engages with the clamp 9. An eye 11 on the stop 10, adapted for disengagement on a slight pull, may engage a hook 12 on the mast.
