Abstract

<PICT:0362609/III/1> <PICT:0362609/III/2> <PICT:0362609/III/3> <PICT:0362609/III/4> Revivification of spent decolourizing carbon obtained from carbonized lignin residues, such as that known under the registered Trade Mark " Suchar, " is effected by subjecting it to a slow stirring movement at a temperature of 850-900 DEG F., any surface combustion being thereby avoided and a thorough aeration effected. Heating is preferably effected electrically and stirring by bladed paddles the shaft of which rotates once in 45 or 60 seconds. Stirring of the material by similar paddles is continued during the cooling stage, the whole process occupying two or three hours. The reaction chamber, 1, 2, 2a, consists of a p firebrick trough 10, the first portion 12 of which is deeper than the remainder, the whole being divided into compartments by partitions 16, 17, 18, 21 .. 25 extending just below the surface of the carbon. The first three compartments are provided with a cover 12<1> made of permeable material, such as cloth, the others having removable covers. Mounted on a shaft 30 traversing the apparatus are six-bladed, L-shaped paddles 49, Fig. 3, carried by arms 42, some or all of the paddles being bent to a spiral form to facilitate forward movement of the carbon. In front of the paddles 41 is a series of stirring blades 36 and behind the final paddle in the cooling chamber 14 is a second set of stirring blades 37. Pairs of heating electrodes 51 are provided in the compartments 16<1> to 25<1>, three pairs being mounted in the first, two in the second, and one in each of the remaining compartments; a knife switch 62 is provided for each compartment. Cooling in the final compartment 14 is effected by a water jacket 26 and a spray 70.
