Abstract

362,002. Typewriters. SCHIMMEL, F., 10, Rue de la Ville-Neuve, Aulnay-sous- Bois, and BIDAULT, E. A., 17, Rue du Louvre, Paris, both in France. Sept. 4, 1930, No. 26480. Convention date, Sept. 4, 1929. [Class 100 (iv).] Type-wheel machines for coding and decoding.- A coding and decoding device consists of a series of discs bearing letters or signs on the periphery and arranged in pairs on a shaft. The pairs of discs 6, 7 are separated by partitions 1 connected together by rods 3. The characters on the discs 6 are formed in intaglio or are inscribed flat on the surfaces, but those on the discs 7 are in relief so as to be capable of printing. The discs 6 are formed with a series of apertures corresponding in number to the number of characters, and arranged near the edge of each disc, and the discs 7 are provided with two diametrically opposed apertures housing balls 8 adapted to be projected by springs to engage with the apertures in the discs 6 to maintain the discs in adjusted position. The discs 7 are provided with two other apertures on the opposite face, these apertures also containing spring-pressed balls adapted to engage apertures in partitions 1, the coupling between the partitions 1 and discs 7 being weaker than that between the discs 6, 7. The relative positions of the discs 6, 7 in each pair are arranged according to a prearranged key, the message to be coded or decoded is set on the discs 6 against indicating marks 16 on the partitions 1, and the cipher or clear text is read on the discs 7. The outer partitions pivotally support segments 10 connected together by rods 12 and strips 11, the strips 11 being soldered to the segments 10 to form a frame in which is mounted a strip of felt soaked in ink and held in place by a cover 13. A paper strip 14 is passed over the rods 12 and under the felt, and pressure on the cover 13 causes the relief characters on the discs 7 to make an impression on the paper strip. The inked felt may be replaced by carbon paper.
