Abstract

361,798. Gas holders. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBEBG AKT.- GES., Nuremberg, Germany. April 11, 1931, No. 10743. Convention date, April 16, 1930. [Class 54.] A waterless gas holder comprises a bell c movable vertically relatively to a fixed base a which is provided at its edge d with liquid, gaseous or semisolid grease sealing means. The base a may be supported by frame b and guided by a central tube f which allows the escape of gases leaking past the seal. Guide rollers m are provided between the bell and frame and bell and tube. If no guide tube is provided additional rollers are provided on a downward extension of the bell. The tube f may be extended to the ground or to the outer part of the frame b. Blocks x may be provided on the frame b to support the part of the bell not reinforced by the internal gas pressure against wind pressure. Tar oil distributing devices q prevent the adherence of ice to the shell and heating devices may be provided around the base a. The pressure of the gas in the bell is regulated by concrete weights l or by water ballast provided on the bell top which may be flat or dished and formed with an upstanding rim and partitions to ensure an even distribution. The bell may be constructed as a helically guided or a telescopic holder and may be at such a height that when lowered its lower edge sinks into an annular gutter in the ground. The upward movement of the bell may be limited by stops on the tube f or frame b so as to allow a narrow gap between the bell and base through which excess gas can escape, or safety valves may be provided on the bell. In constructing the holder, the frame b and base a are first erected and the cover of the bell is then put together on the base a. The shell of the cover is then built on to the cover from the top downwards from a staging temporarily attached to the frame b, the cover being raised as the work proceeds either by gas pressure or mechanically, the tube f being used as an erecting mast. The horizontal seams of the plates forming the bell are preferably welded and the vertical seams are covered by plates secured by rivets. The rivets are preferably countersunk on the inside so as to allow the plates to be utilized as guides to prevent the bell from turning.
