Abstract

361,383. Granulating metals. GLOBE STEEL ABRASIVE CO., Mansfield, Ohio, U.S.A. May 19, 1930, No. 15361. Convention date, Jan. 9. [Class 82 (ii).] Spherical steel granules for use as abrasive material are formed by acting on a falling stream of molten steel with a high-pressure stream of water, preferably so that the particles, almost immediately after formation, fall into a pool of water. Steel is melted in a cupola 1 and flows through openings 2 on to an inclined platform 4 faced with fire-clay in which channels 6 are formed leading to reservoirs 7. The molten steel overflowing from the reservoirs passes down channels 8 to the end of the platform 4 and the falling streams of steel 9 are acted on by high-pressure water streams 15 from nozzles 12. The nozzles 12 are preferably flattened so that a ribbon-shaped stream of water, wider and moving with a greater velocity than the stream of steel, is produced. The particles of steel formed are carried for a short distance by the water stream and then fall into a pool of water 10.
