Abstract
361,368. Actuating controllers; switchgear structures. BROOKHIRST SWITCHGEAR, Ltd., and HIRST, J. A., Northgate Works, Chester. Aug. 11, 1930, No. 23933. [Classes 38 (iii) and 38 (v).] Electrically released switches.-A change-over alternating-current starting switch combined with a contactor type circuit-breaker, is provided with an auxiliary switch in the circuit-breaker closing coil circuit, which auxiliary switch is closed only when the change over switch makes the starting connections, the closing coil circuit through the auxiliary switch being completed through an overload switch controlled by a differential expansion element, heated by a coil connected in the main motor circuit. In Fig. 9 a star-delta switch C is operated by a toggle connected handle, and spring biassed to the delta position, so that the closing coil b3 of the current-breaker B is opened at contacts c, b. The switch c is first moved to its " star " position and an auxiliary switch c is closed to energize the circuit-breaker B, which is maintained over auxiliary contacts b. In this position the motor may be niched. After a time the switch E is released and moves to its delta position. In this position the motor circuit is protected by fuses F, the opening of the circuit-breaker upon failure of voltage and by the thermal overload switches. During the return of the switch c to its delta position it may be arrested at mid stroke by a cam and detent, so that force is necessary to move it to its full " on position. The arrangement may be adopted for auto-transformer starting. Each thermal switch, Fig. 12, comprises a bi-metallic strip h3, heated by a coil H, and operating on a lever h7 to rotate a lever h10, Fig. 13. The tail h11 on the lever h10 bears against the tail e10 of the overload switch E, to maintain it closed against the action of a spring e7. When the overload is sufficiently great, the tail h11 enters a slot e13, and the switch E opens. The switch E is automatically reset by the opening of the isolating switch. The isolating switch 1, Fig. 9, is provided with mechanical interlocks which prevent the switch being closed when the cover is open, and also prevent the cover being opened when the switch is on. The change-over switch is of a simple spring toggle type, and is fully described with reference to Figs. 4 to 8 (not shown). The fuses, Fig. 19, are of the enclosed type with contacts f<2> at opposite ends, the lower parts f<3> being shaped as cylinders, hexagonal or other prisms of such sizes as fit corresponding sockets f4 of starting gear of the same rating. The Provisional Specification states that the invention is applicable to starters of the straight on type.
