Abstract

<PICT:0361361/IV/1> <PICT:0361361/IV/2> The method of treating regenerated cellulose threads in package form in which liquid is forced transversely through the package and in which the package is permitted to expand longitudinally is carried out in such manner that the predetermined limited expansion of the package is made proportional to the number of filaments which make up the thread of the package and, for a package of 3\ba1/2\be in. depth and comprising 44 filament 300 denier thread, is equal to one-eighth of an inch. As shown in the drawings, apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a number of bases 3 disposed on the horizontal platform 2 of a wash rack, above which bases are placed in spaced relation through the medium of inclined cores 6, a plurality of spacers or abutments 4. A cap member 12 is placed on top of the topmost core. The cores p are longitudinally split as shown in Fig. 8 and are collapsable or expansible. A thread cake is placed on each core and is disposed between the flanges of adjacent spacer members 4. The spacing of the members 4 is such that adjacent flanges are disposed farther apart than the depth of the thread cakes so as to provide spaces 8 between the tops of the cakes and the lower flanges of the spacing members. The spaces 8 are selected so as to permit longitudinal expansion of the cakes by the amount defined. In assembling a cake 5 on a core 6, a cloth such as a knitted fabric may first be drawn through the cake and the compressed metal core then inserted through the cloth. Treating liquid is fed under pressure through the pipe 17 into the interior of the cores 6, through the perforations 7 therein, and transversely through the cakes. During the initial stages of the treatment, the cakes expand longitudinally into the spaces 8, until they abut against the superposed spacing members 4, when further elongation is prevented. In the initial stages, if the resistance of the cakes to the transverse passage of liquid is great, the spaces 8 provide relief for the passage of liquid. When treating the cakes with water, the treatment is complete in from 15 to 90 minutes according to the temperature of the water. Hot water is stated to effect simultaneous washing and desulphurizing. Clamping mechanism is provided for preventing the pressure of the treating liquid from lifting the spacer members 4. The clamping device is of the form described in Specification 356,737.
