Abstract
In a nitrating process the nitric acid and the substance to be nitrated are added simultaneously to an amount of sulphuric acid or to another suitable diluting agent that is considerably in excess of both reagents throughout the process. In an example toluene and nitric acid are introduced into sulphuric acid and water is added to give dinitrotoluene.
