Abstract

360,699. Television. LOISEAU, L. M. J., 11, Avenue de la Grande Armee, Paris, and COMPANIE POUR LA FABRICATION DES COMPTEURS ET MATERIAL D'USINES A GAZ, 12, Place des Etats Unis, Montrouge, Seine, both in France. Nov. 29, 1930, No. 36049. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1929. Addition to 358,087. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii).] In a television system as described in the parent Specification, in which the object or image is scanned by means of compression or shock waves in transparent media 2, 4, Fig. 2, the media serve to polarize the light so that only a single analyser or polarizer 3 is required. The optical system 6 for focusing the light on a photo-electric cell 5 is eliminated by combining the cell with the piezoelectric medium 4 as shown in Fig. 4. A gas-filled space 41 is enclosed by a wall 42 of the medium 34 and a potassium-coated cathode plate 36, the anode being in the form of a ring 38. The photoelectric cell may be replaced by a selenium cell, Fig. 5 (not shown). The two media may be combined into one, in which waves are propagated at right-angles, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). At the receiver, Fig. 9, the amplified signals are applied across electrodes 60, 61 on either side of a rare gas atmosphere, the electrode 60 being a metal coating on a piezo-electric medium 58. The field applied by a potentiometer 63 together with the piezoelectric potential produced by a compression wave 44 is just insufficient to produce a luminous discharge, which therefore depends directly on the signals. For colour reproduction three exciting frequencies are used in succession to produce differently coloured discharges. The waves through the media are propagated as shown in Fig. 10. When the wave 65 reaches such a position that it is traversed by polarized light from a source 70, light passes through an analyser 73 to a photoelectric cell 76. The amplified photo-electric current is applied to condenser plates 67 to start another wave. Reflection of the wave is prevented by a sheet of material, having a width a multiple of half the wave-length of the elastic wave in the material, disposed against the end of the medium. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also ensuring that all rays from one element of the object pass through the appropriate stressed area of the medium, by making the latter as thin as possible and employing optical systems of long focal length, and means are employed to correct the consequent distortion of the image. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
