Abstract

Bottles, jars, vases, and other fragile hollow objects are protected by coating with xylolite or magnesium chloride, magnesia, and a filling material, so prepared that when set the coating is loose upon the bottle. The xylolite may be obtained by mixing a magnesium chloride solution of 22 DEG B<\>ae. with magnesia and the other components at a temperature of at least 15 DEG C. Metal gauze or other reinforcing material may be applied to the jar &c. before the application of the coating. Sawdust, peat dust, cellular vegetable materials, or talc may be added as filling materials, and colouring materials such as colcothar may be included.
