Abstract
In preheating distillable carbonaceous materials, with or without hydrogen, by passage through an electrically heated tube, the supply of heat to successive portions of the tube is reduced as the temperature of the materials rises in the direction of flow; preferably the temperature of the materials at the outlet is not more than 20 DEG C. below that of the tube. The electric current may pass through the material of the tube or through wire resistances wound round it. The reduction of heat supply may be effected by change in the cross section or length of the wires, or by the application of different voltages at suitable points. The preheating tube may be arranged inside a reaction vessel.
