[Class 89 (iii).] The staple bar 7 of a desk type of stapler is formed with a deep groove or channel 8 in its upper surface. The staple pusher 10 has depending ears 11 adapted to lie within the groove and to slide on a rod 12 under action of a spring 17. The spring and rod lie entirely within the groove, and the rod has a crooked end 14 removably to engage a hole 16 in the base of the groove. The bar 7 is pivoted to a baseplate 1 at 6, and is enclosed by a cover member 22 that is spaced from it to give clearance for the staples 19 and pusher 10. The front end of the cover member, which may be formed as a metal pressing, is secured by ears and by a bracket 31 to a metal pressing 27 formed with a guide groove for the plunger 28. The latter is enclosed by a front plate 35 secured to the plate 27 with the interposition of spacing strips formed with lateral feet 37, Fig. 3. The staple driver 37a is secured to the plunger 28 by a screw 40 moving in a vertical slot in the plate 35. Also mounted on the screw 40 with a lost-motion connection is a spring plate 41 that has an inturned end 46 for supporting the foremost staple, and lugs 43 engaging fixed cam surfaces 44 whereby the end 46 is moved to release the staple. A spring finger 48 prevents return of a staple on the upward movement of the driver. The base 1 is formed as a metal pressing with side grooves 52 in which horizontal portions 51 of a sheet gauge 49 are adapted to slide. A scale 53 is provided on the upper face of the base. A plate 54 provided with clinching recesses has a downwardly-inclined part 55 to facilitate the sliding of papers into position.
