[Class 27.] Articles stoxed in fixed compartments ;coin action, mechanical-connection, and multiple-coin.-A coin-freed apparatus for the hire or purchase of an article, such as a book, comprises an openable container having more than two locking devices which require the insertion of more than two coins to enable the container to be opened for the article to be obtained, and means whereby at least one of the coins is returned after the return of the article to the' container and the closure thereof The book or article is contained in a receptacle 8, Fig. 2, hingedat 10 to a frame 1 and having a finger hole 12 in' the bottom of. its front plate to facilitate the removal of the book or article when the receptacle is swung outwardly as shown in dotted lines. Four catches 13, slidable in guides 14 on the back of the container and pressed upwards by springs 15, project through holes 16 in a vertical portion 2 of the frame 1 and engage an element 17 to hold the container closed. To obtain the book, three pennies and a shilling are inserted into guides 23 formed by the portion wall 2, Fig. 5, and guard strips 24, the coins resting on the tops of the catches 13. They are then pressed 'down to release the catches by a flap 30, Fig. 3, hinged at 31 to the frame and provided with projections to enter the coin guides. The container swings outwardly under the action of gravity or a spring and the pennies fall to a money box 5. The shilling is retained by a slotted limb 28 of a spring 27 secured to the wall 2. When the book is removed, the container is prevented from being moved to the' closing position by a spring-controlled piece 19, an arm 21 of which cannot enter an aperture 22 in the wall 2 unless the book is replaced. Returning coin.-When the..book is returned and the container closed, the spring 27 is pressed in so that the slot -in the part 28 comes under the shilling which then drops down to a return chamber at the side of the money compartment 5. Fraud, preventing.-A flattened portion of the hinge pin 30a of the flap 30 acts on a lip 32 resiliently mounted on top of the frame 1, and entering a groove 33 in the receptacle 8 when the cover 30 is opened. The receptacle cannot be opened unless the flap 30 is closed, thereby preventing release of the catches 13 by the insertion of knives &c. in the coin guides. Money-boxes.-The upper edges of the moneybox are recessed so that when it is pulled out it is given a slight tilt to cause the coins to be ejected through an aperture in the bottom of its back wall. They then fall through an aperture in the bottom of the frame to a collecting receptacle held underneath.
