Abstract

353,065. Coin-freed article delivery apparatus. MERIVALE, V., Middleton Hall, Leeds. April 16, 1930, No. 12091. [Class 27.] Articles stored in separate compartments; coinaction, mechanicalconnection and multiple-coin. - An apparatus for the alternative hire or purchase of an article, such as a book, comprises a container 1, Fig. 2, having an upper compartment for a book 2 which rests upright on a hinged false bottom 3, and a lower closed compartment 4 containing the actuating mechanism. The container is closed by a flap 6 which overlaps the compartment 4 and has four tubular members 15 passing through slots into the compartment 4 where they are engaged by spring catches 16 to lock the flap 6 in closing position. The catches are pivoted members biassed by spring plungers 19 adjustable by screws 20. To release the flap, a shilling and three pennies are inserted through slots 12, one into each member 15, and a cover 21, which is hinged to the flap at 39, is then closed so that projections 22 on the cover press on the coin and cause these to lift the catches out of notches 17 in the members 15. The flap 6 then opens under the action of blade springs. When the book is taken out, the false bottom 3, which may be in several sections, rises under the action of a spring 11 to foul a bar 10 and prevent the flap from being closed unless the book is replaced. The three pennies, representing the hire of the book, fall to the bottom of the compartment 4, and the shilling, representing the purchase price, falls to a member 28, Fig. 4, rotatable in a guide 27 and provided with ribs 29 one of which has an end 30 to retain the coin. Returning coin.-If the book is replaced, the member 28 is rotated to deliver the coin to a return tray 24 by a bifurcated pin 33 on the flap 6 rocking a member 31, Fig. 5, which is influenced by a spring 32 to hold the member 28 in coinretaining position. Fraud preventing.-To prevent its fraudulent actuation by a pin or knife, the edge 34 of the member 31 is bevelled and a guard strip 35 is mounted in line with the vertex of the bevel. Also the flap 6 is prevented from opening unless the cover 21 lies flush with it, to prevent unlocking of the catches by a knife. For this purpose, the hinge pin of the cover is flattened at 40, Fig. 6, and can enter or leave a slot 41 in a projection 38 of the container, that extends through the flap 6, only when the cover is flush with the flap. Registering.-The pin 33 on the flap operates a counter through ratchet mechanism 37.
