Abstract

<PICT:0358847/IV/1> Artificial silk in the form of cakes, loose packs, or bundles is dried in such manner that the drying medium is led practically exclusively along the freely exposed inner walls of the middle apertures of the cakes, packs, or bundles. As shown in the drawing a vertical drying duct 1 is provided on the bottom 2 with a number of openings 4 over which a number of cakes are arranged side by side with their central openings 5 exactly over the openings 4. The cakes are covered with a plate or container 6 provided with apertures corresponding to the openings 4. Another layer of cakes is placed on the plate 6. The cakes are thus built up into a number of columns with intervening plates between the superposed cakes. The plates 6 may be removably secured to the wall of the duct 1. Warm air is passed through the duct in either direction. The process may be carried out continuously by providing the containers or plates 6 with chains or endless transport belts which are continuously passed through the duct 1. By adjustment of the temperature and velocity of the drying air, and the velocity of the plates carrying the cakes, the latter may be made to emerge from the duct in the dry state. The cakes treated in this manner are dried from the inside outwardly so that the various layers of threads may shrink freely, and that after drying there are no differences in shrinkage between the inner and outer surfaces of the cakes.
