Abstract

For the washing, desulphurizing, bleaching, soaping, &c. of artificial silk &c. the cakes or bobbins <PICT:0363064/IV/1> <PICT:0363064/IV/2> are supported between two endless flexible bands by means of which they are conveyed to a source of liquid or gas under pressure, the arrangement being such that liquid or gas is supplied to the interior of the cakes or bobbins. Thus, there may be employed an upper belt B and a lower belt A driven at the same peripheral speed and the upper belt arranged to converge on the lower belt in order to permit the cakes C preferably arranged in tiers to be placed in position, while at the other end of its travel the upper belt follows an inclined path to enable the cakes to be removed after treatment. Rubber rings F, G secured to the outer faces of the bands locate the cakes in position. The lower band moves across the face of a chest I to which liquid under pressure is supplied from an upper tank L, the face of the chest being provided with slots K which register with holes H in the centre of the rings F, liquid thereby passing to the interior of the tier of cakes and after flowing through the cakes is collected in a trough M from which it is returned to the tank L; the tiers of cakes are held in position and their upper ends sealed by means of a pressure-plate P over which the upper band B travels. The apparatus may be arranged for the treatment of the cakes with different liquids in succession, in which case a series of chests I across which the band A travels, are provided; and in order to remove the liquid carried by the cakes after treatment, the upper band may be arranged to move across the slotted face of a chest supplied with compressed air, access of which to the interior of the cakes is permitted by providing perforations in the centre of the rings G similar to the perforations in the lower band. The cakes are preferably each supported on a resilient holder D, for example, as described in Specification 362,114 and of a length sufficient to permit a limited expansion of the cakes; distance-pieces E of annular construction press against the intermediate ends of the holds so that a watertight joint is made.
