Abstract
358,758. Magnetic tests. PERRYMAN ELECTRIC CO., Inc., 4901, Hudson Boulevard, North Bergen, New Jersey, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Schwerin, P. ; 47, West Pierrepont Avenue, Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Nov. 1, 1930, No. 32922. Convention date, Nov. 2, 1929. [Class 37.] A direction finder for aircraft, ships or other vehicles consists of a thermionic valve having a cathode 20, a main anode 18, two semicylindrical auxiliary anodes 15, 16 and means such as polepieces 22 of material, for example permalloy, of high magnetic permeability and low permanent magnetism, for diverting lines of magnetic force due to the earth's magnetic field across the main electron stream so as to divert it to one or other of the auxiliary anodes. The anode 18 is connected through a galvanometer G and a battery B with the cathode, and a galvanometer G<1> is connected across the auxiliary anodes. The polepieces are preferably mounted parallel with the centre line of the aircraft, so that when travelling due west or east, the galvanometer G has a maximum and the galvanometer G<1> a minimum reading; when travelling due north or south, the galvanometer G has a minimum and the galvanometer G<1> a maximum reading.
