Abstract
358,546. Washing and concentrating coal and ores. RICHARDS, C. F., 411, Erie Street, White Haven, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. July 2, 1930, No. 20097. [Class 82 (ii).] In apparatus for washing and concentrating coal and ores the material is fed from a shoot on to the upper surface of a rotary separating screen disposed in a fluid trough, the separation being effected by jets of water passed up through the screen. The material is fed down a shoot 13 and over an angular lip 14 adjustable by a hand-wheel 16 on to the upper surface of a rotary screen 41 disposed in a fluid trough 2. A casing 44 circumferentially adjustable by means of bolts 45 in slots 46 surrounds the bottom and sides of the screen and water is passed to the interior of the screen from a valved pipe 47 and issues in jets through the perforations on the top of the screen to separate the material delivered from the lip 14. The screen is rotated by belt drive 11 from a driven shaft 10 which also drives a conveyer 7 which removes heavy material which falls to the bottom of the trough 2, the speed of rotation of the screen being controlled by variable speed gearing 12. The quantity of material delivered to the screen is controlled by a gate 18 in the shoot 13 connected through a shaft 19 and lever 23 to a bell-crank lever 21 carrying an adjustable weight 24 on its horizontal arm. The horizontal arm is connected by levers 25, 26 to a gate 27 controlling the discharge of the heavy materials from the screen to the bottom of the trough 2. The gate 27 acts against a wall 28 over the top of which the lighter material is forced by the action of the water jets on to a floor 29, the height of the discharge level being controlled by a sliding gate 30 lying against the wall 28 and controlled by a hand-wheel 33. The floor 29 is provided with a divider 35 of inverted V-shape to direct the lighter material to the sides of the trough and through adjustable gates 37 to discharge shoots 40. In a modification, Fig. 5, there is no mechanical connection between the gate controlling the feed and that controlling the discharge of heavy material from the screen, the gate 18 being connected to a shaft 19 carrying a lever 56 with adjustable weight 57 and the discharge for the heavy material consisting of a gate 50 on a shaft 51 controlled by a hand-lever 52. Several separating troughs may be connected in series, the light material from one being passed to the next for further treatment, the heavy material being discharged from the trough through a rotary valve 54 operatively connected to the shaft 42 driving the rotary screen. The screen may have groups of openings 55 followed by imperforate areas so that the jets are intermittent.
