[Class 143.] In a machine for filling valve bags with cement or other pulverulent material the bag 4 is suspended on a nozzle 3<11>, pivoted at 7 to a hanger 6 of a weighing mechanism, and normally held in the position shown by the engagement of a catch 9 with a hook 8<1> on the arm 8 carrying the nozzle. In this position, an inclined joint divides the nozzle 311 beneath a discharge pipe 3<1> leading from the filling tank 1. The weighing apparatus comprises a beam 11 carrying hangers 6, 12, guided by brackets 14, 15. Weights 13 depend from the hanger 12 and the movement of the weighing system is controlled by the engagement of stops 16<11>, 17<11> on the hangers with stops 161, 17<1> on the brackets. During the filling operation, a gate on an arm 18<1> is brought into the open position by the action of a cam 31<1> and held in that position by a pawl, and a spring 21 on the hanger 6 is depressed by the action of a cam 321 and a double lever 22. The action of the spring 21 causes the beam to rock before the predetermined weight of material is in the sack, and releases the lever so that the gate in the tube 31 is closed. After an interval, to allow imprisoned air to escape, the cam 32<1> releases the lever 22 and spring 21, and a cam 31<11> again opens the gate in the tube 3<1> so that the filling may be completed. Upon the completion of the weight, a cam 30<11> releases the catch 9 so that the nozzle 3<11> may swing in a clockwise direction and deliver the filled bag.
