Abstract

Artificial masses prepared by polymerizing, in the absence of a solvent, a mixture of an organic vinyl ester with a vinyl ether, or of an organic vinyl ester or a vinyl ether with a polymerizable compound containing the group CH2 = C < which is not a vinyl ester, ether, or halide, may be used for lining vessels for use in the chemical industry.ALSO:Artificial masses are manufactured by polymerizing, in the absence of a solvent, a mixture of an organic vinyl ester with a vinyl ether, or of an organic vinyl ester or a vinyl ether with a polymerizable compound containing the group CH2 = C < which is not a vinyl ester, ether or halide. The polymerization may be effected by the action of heat or of another form of energy, such as chemically active rays or electrical energy, and may be carried out in the presence of a usual polymerization catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide, a perborate, hydrogen peroxide or silver peroxide. A filling agent, a softening agent or both may be added. The products, which differ in chemical and physical properties from the single polymerides or mixtures thereof, are suitable for preparing formed articles for electrotechnical purposes, for preparing fancy goods, for lining vessels for use in the chemical industry, and for the preparation of compound glass. Examples describe the polymerization of mixtures of: (1) acrylic acid ethyl ester and vinyl acetate; (2) acrylic acid methyl ester and vinyl acetate; (3) vinyl acetate and butadiene; (4) vinyl ethyl ether and isoprene; (5) vinyl acetate and vinyl ethyl ether. A mixture of vinyl ethyl ether and styrene is also specified. Specification 313,569, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to.
