Abstract

Colour lakes are manufactured by treating the colour lakes of basic dyestuffs and inorganic heteropoly acids with reducing agents, such as sodium hydrosulphite, sodium bisulphite or nascent hydrogen formed by the action of zinc dust on the acid precipitating bath. The treatment may be carried out in the presence of substrata, and the lakes after reduction may advantageously be heated for a short time in the bath. In examples: (1) Methyl Violet B is precipitated on a substratum of hydrate of alumina by a solution of the acid sodium salt of phosphotungstic acid and the product reduced by sodium hydrosulphite and afterwards heated to 90 DEG C., yielding a violet lake; (2) Diamond Green GX is precipitated by a solution of the acid sodium salt of phosphotungstomolybdic acid or of the components thereof, the product reduced by the addition of zinc dust or sodium bisulphite solution, and the whole then boiled for half an hour.
