Abstract

356,846. Fluid - actuated regulating valves. WHITTLE, R. W., of Superheater Co., Trafford Park, Manchester, and SUPERHEATER CO., Ltd., Bush House, Aldwych, London. June 26, 1930, No. 19499. [Class 135.] Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.-In regulating or throttle-valve apparatus, for controlling locomotives &c., of the kind comprising a number of lift valves controlling common inlet and outlet headers, and having means for opening one or more of these valves, the said valves are each provided with a cylinder and piston in conjunction with a single master control valve, or a plurality of separate control valves, disposed at a central control position such as the foot plate of a locomotive, so that the valves can be operated one or more at a time, or in succession from a distance without mechanical connections. The valves 9, with operating pistons 7 and dashpot pistons 10, are disposed as shown in Fig. 2, valves C, D, E being of standard size, whilst valve B is smaller and valve A smaller still. Separate service pipes from the piston chambers 6 of the valves A .. E lead to the separate remote control valves, or to the connections A .. E of a single master control plug cock 21, Fig. 5, or rotary disc valve 34, Fig. 12, the ports and passages in the plug or rotary disc being such that any one, or more, or all of said valves, in succession, may be opened and subsequently closed. The service pipes referred to above may be grouped and led through the steam space of the boiler to the control stations. The piston chambers 6 may be lubricated by a force feed or mechanical lubricator connected thereto by pipes.
